Windows at Supperclub tomorrow (Friday 7/24)

Posted by pk. Fri, 23 Jul 2010 17:38:00 GMT

So I’m at home pondering this… (in a very “chill” state due to Deckard’s mix, see below) Am I over-using Space Cowboy channels to aid in the creation of the Temple of Flux? Hmmm…. I’m just kidding, you really think I ponder such things? Yes, those of you who no me, know I take such things seriously (perhaps too seriously) but surely I don’t ponder them, the answers to such things are self-evident (such as the supremacy of Arinell’s pizza in this foggy excuse for summer-in-the-city). Anyway, so I’m doing this little sculpture project with a few friends for this little arts festival in some dusty town in northern Nevada, and we need to raise a lot of money to get it done, like $50k a lot. The big problem is that we’re going to burn this sculpture on Sept. 5th as a giant piece of performance art, and therefor can’t sell the sculpture. It’s all about somehow relating that change is a natural part of our lives, both when confronting life and death, as well as understanding our relationship to the environments that surround us, both built and “natural”. See it’s all about perception and framing how you see the world. Kind of like when you look through a window and only see a bit of the world around you. You get this, windows are an easy way to see the artificial frames that we construct to shape our views, and I mean that in a deep, very deep, I mean you are getting sleepy deep, metaphysical way. So the city is a construct of our continual framing of the real (its all really just a bunch of surfaces with windows right?), in both literal and philosophical ways. Depending on how you frame things, there is either joy or pain; it just matters how you build the window.

I can go on…. but you rather just come down to Supperclub SF tomorrow (Friday 7/24) to WINDOWS: joys and panes of a metropolis. It should change how you see things…

License to DJ (and our upcoming events) 4

Posted by 8Ball Thu, 22 Apr 2010 23:42:00 GMT

Hello Friendly Person:

It happens to everyone. It’s the weekend, and you and some friends head out to a bar or club. You wait in line, show your ID, and maybe pay a cover. You empty your wallet on a round or two of cocktails, and you smile because you know you’re poised at the starting block of an epic night out. But you look out on the dancefloor. It’s empty. You look around and see that no one is smiling and everyone looks a little annoyed, even the bartenders. Something is wrong, and then you realize what it is… it’s the DJ. The DJ is bad. Horribly, criminally bad. The DJ is sucking balls, and that means so will your night out. Until now we’ve had to accept these scenarios as a bad roll of the dice, but now Space Cowboy’s Bureau of Brilliant Ideas has cooked up a solution that’s long overdue: a License to DJ.

The concept is simple. No longer will the DJ booth be an unregulated wild west where charlatans, thugs, and degenerates of questionable taste shall be permitted to operate with impunity. Instead, only those who’ve proven themselves exemplary at entertaining by passing a stringent series of tests (written and aural) shall attain the certification that allows them to stand publicly behind a mixer. It’s like the judiciary’s bar exam (though the DJ’s bar exam will most likely really take place in a real bar). And this won’t simply be a pass/fail test. A License to DJ will be similar to restaurants’ sanitation ratings. Regardless of the size of a venue, only DJs who’ve been rated ‘A’ will be permitted to playing prime slots. DJs with a ‘B’ will be welcome to open and close, but at no time will they be permitted to play songs with big build ups, and unlike ‘A’s, there times ‘B’s will be obligated to play requests. DJs who have ‘C’ licenses will be restricted to playing side rooms or in bathrooms (again, an ‘A’ DJ must play the prime slot, even in a bathroom, or the ‘C’ DJ can opt to play any of the RIPEcast mixes from Breakfast of Champions during that time slot, though they must remove their headphones from the mixer at that time and present a placard that says as much). ‘D’s will only be allowed to play the suburbs and bedroom communities, ‘F’s can play any venue they choose in Las Vegas.

Of course there will be those opportunistic snakeoil salesmen who’ll buy their licenses online. Desperate, under-funded promoters may book them, blinded by the promises of cheaper thrills and impossible promises (example: a dubstep DJ that swears he’ll get everyone to dance, even the people who aren’t on ketamine). So a regulatory agency will be formed, and it will have agents vested with the power to ensure DJs comply with the policies and ethical guidelines associated with licensure. “Better to end early than suffer a bad DJ,” shall be their motto and these agents will be empowered to eject CDs, remove turntables needles, or unplug laptops, as necessary when they find a DJ in violation of those guidelines. This brings an end to the threat of having a DJ drop “Oops! I Did It Again” at the height of the party, as Polarbear did at the Black Rock Hoedown at Burning Man in 1999. Oh, the humanity! Drug testing will be mandatory, though the music you play will determine whether the tests should be positive or negative. Aggrieved promoters can bring their cases to the agency, and DJs found to be afoul will suffer disbarment and be banned from entering clubs or bars for the rest of their lives.

All three methods are easy to use and free o’charge!

And now this week’s featured mix on The RIPEcast, MoPo’s live set from Breakfast of Champions this year..

“I got to BOC at 8 AM, having already been awake for 24-hours producing Sea of Dreams, and playing a 3-hour set there in Silent Disco. The plan was to drop gear, then head home for a nap as my set was at 6pm. As the day wound on I realized that going home would be the end of me, so I figured I should tough it out. Besides, after wanting to play this party for so long, maybe this was simply the final flaming hoop Id have to jump through to earn the right. Right? Better said than done. The day wore on. Good conversation, some dance, a burger, a bloody, my throat growing raspier and more sore. Id look at my watch and it would mock me by saying “11:30” or “1:15” . By 2pm I couldn’t even talk anymore and was relegated to “that guy who whispers in everyone’s ears at parties”. Somewhere along the way I realized I didn’t have Serato Cds, a potentially devastating development if I couldn’t find some blanks. Thankfully, Kramer HAD blanks which I paid for by promptly spilling his full beer all over him. Now I’m THAT GUY too.”

“At 4 Clarkie went on and sprayed flaming gasoline on the crowd while I nervously burned my Cds behind him. At 5, Aaron Pope went on and reminded us why he’s one of the finest dance-music Djs in the Bay Area… Just an outstanding set, energetic, funky, yet progressive-enough for the tweakers. A VERY hard act to follow. By this point, I’m going on 36 hours or so so its basically adrenaline and redbull. I figured my go-to thematic funk/rock remix stuff would be too tough a transition from Pope so I stayed with the more beat-centric stuff earlier, then downshifted into the chunky later as it got darker. It seemed to work really well. To my surprise, the techier stuff was less effective than anything with a rap or a hook (my go-to territory anyway). When I downshifted into the funky stuff (“Earthlings” and “Jungle Jam”) and my own edits, the crowd really just erupted. It seemed like folks were about ready to rock out, so we went there. Towards the end, the security told me I had 10 minutes, so I dropped the tempo and went into a few midtempo bangers with the idea that Id close out with “Whistlers Delight” which ends on Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. As it turned out, 3 minutes into this Andrea got them to give us another hour and I upshifted into Neighbour’s “Superstition” so that 8Ball and Zach Moore could take it home. All in all I couldn’t have been more thankful of the opportunity to play for most of everyone I love at one of my favorite all-time get downs.” – MoPo

Not all DJs are created equal (our upcoming events!)

Posted by 8Ball Wed, 07 Apr 2010 18:06:00 GMT

Hello Friendly Person

About that last email… It wasn’t supposed to go to you, it was meant for the Space Cowboy DJs. See, we’ve got a big cluster of DJs in our outfit, and in addition to the Space Cowboy events that we do, they’re all also playing different gigs around town. I do the public service of sending out their gigs with these occasional announcements, and before I do I put out a call to get everyone’s gig info. All of our Space Cowboys DJs are fantastic behind the decks, but when it comes to little things like keeping track of their gigs or even just knowing what year it is, well… let’s just say not all DJs are created equal.

When I put out a call for event info, it’s not uncommon to get a reply with absolutely no text in the message body, just a jpeg attachment of some wacked out flyer with wavy fonts and no details besides the date since the DJ forgot to include the backside with the details. Sometimes I get text messages that say, “dud im playng in the missh this week, pls post!” I’m sure some other DJs are wondering why I never post the events they send me telepathically.

So now you know how the Space Cowboy sausage gets made. I hope that doesn’t turn you off from coming to one or all of the great events we have coming up, like NIGHTLIFE at the Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park, tomorrow night! See you there!

XO,
H8B

Friday, April 9 – The VIVID 8 Year Anniversary Birthday Party @ WISH
Featuring Marty Gotera (Germany / Sassafras) & Mancub (Space Cowboys)

8 years ago a small neighborhood bar opened it’s door in a not so small neighborhood surrounded by some of the biggest clubs in the city. But what it lacked in size it easily made up for in atmosphere & vibe. The amazing couple that opened WISH, who just happen to be two of the coolest people you could ever hope to meet, poured their heart & soul into making WISH a place that not only felt like home, but had some of the best bartenders serving some of the best drinks, and DJs that embraced an underground music culture.

DJs Seven & Sol made a commitment to WISH way back then to throw some of the best free parties twice a month at this little neighborhood bar and inviting down the some of the city’s most talented DJs into play. The end result is 8 f-ing years of good times, good friends and good music.

This Friday it all goes down as we welcome back 2 of our favorite guests. First up is one of the very first guest DJs to play VIVID way back in 2002, Marty Gotera (Sassafras), who is back from Germany for this special occasion. Not many DJs have a record collection as deep and diverse as Marty, and he’s not afraid to dig deep into the bins to find that ultra rare track to get the party started. Then headlining it like no one else can is the one and only Mancub (Space Cowboys). Known for rocking sets at some of the biggest events, especially Burning Man, this Nitevibe top 10 Dream Team’er is going to bring it home with his signature sound and boxing gloves to boot! …and of course sandwiched right in the middle is Seven & Sol with a special birthday set as the each of them will celebrate their birthdays too. Go Aries!

So come celebrate 8 Years of VIVID this Friday! It all starts at 10pm right after the world famous Flavasauce Happy Hour featuring Reggie, Dave Mak, Fredness, JZ and Justin Case! :-) http://www.flavasauce.com

Soul of Man on the Gough Street Sessions
So earlier this week an unexpected treat was dropped into the Gough Street inbox by our good friend Justin Rushmore, one half of the extraordinary production duo known as Soul of Man (Fingerlickin’ Records). It’s the second volume in Justin’s “Breakin’ in the House” series, a delectable 86-minute everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mash-up that leaves no genre unsampled.

“In recent years DJ sets have been getting back to their eclectic roots, mashing up genres”, says Justin. “In this mix I’ve taken my favorite current house, breaks, disco, electro, techno, even dubstep tunes. These are the big ones destroying my dance floors! Subfocus, Armand Van Helden, Groove Armada, Slyde, Cirez D, Elite Force, Evil 9 and more. Plus, an exclusive tune from my new project Rushmore & Fiasco ‘The Vibe’. Enjoy the Selection!” (And enjoy it we will, Justin. No worries there. I think it’s safe to say this mix is about to find its way to the top of many iTunes playlists!)

There are two ways you can get Justin’s “Breakin in the House” mix:
1. Directly from Box.net
2. Or by subscribing to the Gough Street Sessions
