Simon Shackleton’s Elite Force project began way back in 1996, debuting on his own newly founded Fused and Bruised label with a series of peerless 12s and remixes. After a successful five years, he put Fused and Bruised on the backburner to concentrate on production work, and following several years with Whole9Yards and Moonshine he became a mainstay recording artist for AdriftRecordings (formally known as Kingsize Records) before moving on to set up hisown hugely successful U&A imprint.

Often credited for being a lynchpin in the developing the tech-funk genre (an amalgamation of breaks, house, techno and electro) he has released a series of highly successful singles in the past few years, finding broad support from DJs and musicians across the board, including the likes of James Zabiela, Sasha, Crystal Method, Laurent Garnier and Fatboy Slim to name but five. In 2008 released a semi-retrospective double album’s worth of remixes and re-workings of a 12-year back catalogue, with over 25 mixes coming from such luminaries as Miles Dyson, Rogue Element, Deepgroove, Dylan Rhymes & Calvertron.

In addition to these solo singles, Meat Katie has been a regular collaborator with Elite Force, a relationship that had begun in 2003 with the massive-selling ‘Toba’, and that will see their creative relationship come to fruition in 2009 with the launch of their new joint project under the name ‘Dustbowl’, as well as a series of singles under the ‘Meat Katie & Elite Force’ banner.

As a remixer, Elite Force has always been in huge demand, with re-workings for the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Crystal Method, Jungle Brothers, Stereo MCs, UNKLE, Infusion, Rennie Pilgrem, Shiloh and Dylan Rhymes all contributing to his reputation as one of the most creative and effective remixers around.

Elite Force’s music has also been the soundtrack to many a movie, with a huge list of impressive A-list credits to his name, including the likes of the Matrix, Charlie’s Angels, Arlington Road, Mortal Kombat, Crow, The Bone Collector, The Jackyll, Spiderman 2 and his music has appeared on a wide array of TV shows, from CSI to Top Gear, from Football Focus to LA Doctors. He’s also soundtracked a number of computer games, including no fewer than 5 FIFA games, several of the Wipeout series, The Matrix and Motorstorm 1, and he is currently writing some bespoke music for forthcoming games for Ferrari and Motorstorm2.

On the decks, Elite Force has been a prime mover since 1990 when he cut his teeth playing huge student nights and self-promoted acid house nights in the South West of England, before moving up to ….London…. and ultimately gravitating towards his tech-funk style, with which he now has a full diary of global bookings. He has become known as one of the top technicians on a circuit that has included massive shows in Belarus, Hungary, Australia, Italy, USA, Czech Republic, India, Turkey, Spain, Japan, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and China, amongst others, as well as numerous festival slots including Glastonbury, Coachella, Bloom, Wickerman, the Glade and more recently Burning Man.

He was also responsible for the hugely influential Strongarm Sessions webcasts which became something of an institution since their inception back in 2001, receiving as they did around 20,000 downloads per show, but now put on the backburner to concentrate on other projects, such as his own blog, Tech-Funk Manifesto and his other musical projects, such as Dustbowl (with Meat Katie).

Chill Out 3

Posted by Deckard Sat, 17 Jul 2010 00:08:00 GMT

Howdy cowpokes,

It’s my first time on the Space Cowboys blog so be gentle. My name is Deckard, you may know me from such mixes as Some People Call Me a Space Cowboy, Ghost Ship or Breakfast of Champions. When not cranking up the beats at clubs I like to explore the prettier side of electronic music. I think you can see where I am going with this already. That’s right, full on dubstep bitches! Just kidding, that’s not how I roll.

I put the finishing touches on My Definition of Chill Volume II after starting it some 13 months ago. If I knew of someone else putting together compilations like this maybe it wouldn’t take me so damn long and I could just crib from them. Anyway, I digress.

After working on this mix on and off for over a year I believe I have formulated the proper uses and/or environments for this mix.

They are as follows:
  • Waking up
  • Winding down
  • Calming savage beasts (it works especially well on rhinos. More testing needed on gorillas)
  • Beach/park on a sunny day
  • Chilling anytime anywhere
  • Sitting on the toilet (eew, but still acceptable)

I hope you enjoy wherever you choose to listen. If you like what you hear check out my Facebook page or website for more mixes (links below).

Not all DJs are created equal (our upcoming events!)

    Posted by 8Ball Wed, 07 Apr 2010 18:06:00 GMT

    Hello Friendly Person

About that last email… It wasn’t supposed to go to you, it was meant for the Space Cowboy DJs. See, we’ve got a big cluster of DJs in our outfit, and in addition to the Space Cowboy events that we do, they’re all also playing different gigs around town. I do the public service of sending out their gigs with these occasional announcements, and before I do I put out a call to get everyone’s gig info. All of our Space Cowboys DJs are fantastic behind the decks, but when it comes to little things like keeping track of their gigs or even just knowing what year it is, well… let’s just say not all DJs are created equal.

When I put out a call for event info, it’s not uncommon to get a reply with absolutely no text in the message body, just a jpeg attachment of some wacked out flyer with wavy fonts and no details besides the date since the DJ forgot to include the backside with the details. Sometimes I get text messages that say, “dud im playng in the missh this week, pls post!” I’m sure some other DJs are wondering why I never post the events they send me telepathically.

So now you know how the Space Cowboy sausage gets made. I hope that doesn’t turn you off from coming to one or all of the great events we have coming up, like NIGHTLIFE at the Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park, tomorrow night! See you there!

    XO,
    H8B

Friday, April 9 – The VIVID 8 Year Anniversary Birthday Party @ WISH
Featuring Marty Gotera (Germany / Sassafras) & Mancub (Space Cowboys)

8 years ago a small neighborhood bar opened it’s door in a not so small neighborhood surrounded by some of the biggest clubs in the city. But what it lacked in size it easily made up for in atmosphere & vibe. The amazing couple that opened WISH, who just happen to be two of the coolest people you could ever hope to meet, poured their heart & soul into making WISH a place that not only felt like home, but had some of the best bartenders serving some of the best drinks, and DJs that embraced an underground music culture.

DJs Seven & Sol made a commitment to WISH way back then to throw some of the best free parties twice a month at this little neighborhood bar and inviting down the some of the city’s most talented DJs into play. The end result is 8 f-ing years of good times, good friends and good music.

This Friday it all goes down as we welcome back 2 of our favorite guests. First up is one of the very first guest DJs to play VIVID way back in 2002, Marty Gotera (Sassafras), who is back from Germany for this special occasion. Not many DJs have a record collection as deep and diverse as Marty, and he’s not afraid to dig deep into the bins to find that ultra rare track to get the party started. Then headlining it like no one else can is the one and only Mancub (Space Cowboys). Known for rocking sets at some of the biggest events, especially Burning Man, this Nitevibe top 10 Dream Team’er is going to bring it home with his signature sound and boxing gloves to boot! …and of course sandwiched right in the middle is Seven & Sol with a special birthday set as the each of them will celebrate their birthdays too. Go Aries!

So come celebrate 8 Years of VIVID this Friday! It all starts at 10pm right after the world famous Flavasauce Happy Hour featuring Reggie, Dave Mak, Fredness, JZ and Justin Case! :-) http://www.flavasauce.com

Soul of Man on the Gough Street Sessions
So earlier this week an unexpected treat was dropped into the Gough Street inbox by our good friend Justin Rushmore, one half of the extraordinary production duo known as Soul of Man (Fingerlickin’ Records). It’s the second volume in Justin’s “Breakin’ in the House” series, a delectable 86-minute everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mash-up that leaves no genre unsampled.

“In recent years DJ sets have been getting back to their eclectic roots, mashing up genres”, says Justin. “In this mix I’ve taken my favorite current house, breaks, disco, electro, techno, even dubstep tunes. These are the big ones destroying my dance floors! Subfocus, Armand Van Helden, Groove Armada, Slyde, Cirez D, Elite Force, Evil 9 and more. Plus, an exclusive tune from my new project Rushmore & Fiasco ‘The Vibe’. Enjoy the Selection!” (And enjoy it we will, Justin. No worries there. I think it’s safe to say this mix is about to find its way to the top of many iTunes playlists!)

There are two ways you can get Justin’s “Breakin in the House” mix:
    1. Directly from Box.net
    2. Or by subscribing to the Gough Street Sessions
