Hipster Fixie Vamps (aka Fri happy hr at Mars Bar, Puttin' on Ritz Sat, and more)

Hello Friendly Person

I’ll be honest, I’ve been having a tough time since Corey Haim died. But not just because of the tragedy of it all, I mean the guy was Lucas fer chrissake! What I’m really mourning is the passing of my dreams to snorting blow off the backsides of models with Hollywood’s finest at the Mondrian after establishing myself as a highly successful screenwriter. See, when Corey Haim was put in a coffin so was my great idea for a sequel to Lost Boy—a sequel that would reboot Haim’s career, kick-start mine, and turn the whole vampire craze inside out. I might as well share the outline with you now, since you are the only audience who will ever know about this important piece of cinematic cogitation.

FADE IN:

We have a slow opening SHOT on a foggy night in SF. We know it’s foggy because you can hear the fog HORNS, plus there’s all this FOG. It’s all very EVOCATIVE.

We’re up in Twin Peaks and it seems like a pleasant enough spooky night, until we hear the scared PANTING of some guy. Then we see him, and he’s this old cyclist in one of those gay, tight spandex cycling body suits, and he’s peddling hard and looking back over his shoulder like he’s scared for his LIFE or something. He races by the camera, and then we hear sinister LAUGHING, peddling, and WHOOSHING. We don’t see the originators of this cacophony of chaos, but we know they’re bad because they sound EVIL.

CUT TO the biker guy. He’s at the top of Twin Peaks now, he’s out of breath, but he’s prepared to keep going. Then there’s a WHOOSHING sound and get suddenly gets a FLAT TIRE. He SCREAMS. Now with a flat tire, the guy is totally at the mercy of the evil that’s pursued him, and he’s in trouble because these things have NO MERCY. The last we see of him is a shot from ABOVE, as something evil descends on him, lifts him off his bike, and carries him off into fog and LAUGHTER.

MUSIC plays and the credits roll: LOST BOYS: FIXIE HIPSTER VAMPS OF DOOM

Then we INTRODUCE the protagonist. His name is BRODY, and he’s an extremely good-looking kid from the mid-west who’s moved to San Francisco with his younger brother with dreams of opening an organic coffee shop in the Mission. For now, though, he settles for working in an organic coffee house in the Mission and working on his bicycle, which is rad. It’s clear Brody is not local, though, because he doesn’t have a beard or skinny jeans, and none of his tshirts are at all ironic.

CUT TO an evening shot of Market Street. It’s CRITICAL MASS and Brody is riding with his brother on rad bikes, attempting to make friends. Brody’s attention is captured by an extremely hot, but dark and evil-looking chick with BANGS, riding a fixie. Her name is DAPHNE and she eye fucks Brody until he starts to ride towards her, and then she rides away to join a group of extremely good-looking HIPSTER FIXIE VAMPS who are riding along side Critical Mass, looking mean. They all have these IRONIC beards, plus skinny jeans, and some of them even look HOMELESS-CHIC. Daphne rides with them and she has big SUNGLASSES. They take on look at Brody’s bike, which is not a fixie, and they laugh and ride away menacingly.

THE PLOT CONTINUES TO EVOLVE IN A CAPTIVATING WAY

Brody is compelled to hang out with the evil Fixie Hipsters, who push him to his bicycle riding LIMITS. Brody is pretty cool, but they’re like ‘meh’. Later, Brody’s brother notices that Brody is wearing skinny jeans, and he’s started to grow a beard. He’s starting to CHANGE.

THE PLOT CONTINUES TO EVOLVE IN AN EVEN MORE CAPTIVATING WAY

Later in the story, there’s a CONFRONTATION, wherein Brody is forced to confront the head Hipster Vamp. Brody’s brother enlists the help of Corey Haim and Frank Chu to fight the vampires, and Frank uses his 12 Galaxies sign as a stake, which impales the lead vampire and FREES San Francisco from the curse of the evil Hipster Fixie Vamps.

Or does IT?

FADE TO BLACK

Soul of Man on the Gough Street Sessions
So earlier this week an unexpected treat was dropped into the Gough Street inbox by our good friend Justin Rushmore, one half of the extraordinary production duo known as Soul of Man (Fingerlickin’ Records). It’s the second volume in Justin’s “Breakin’ in the House” series, a delectable 86-minute everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mash-up that leaves no genre unsampled.

“In recent years DJ sets have been getting back to their eclectic roots, mashing up genres”, says Justin. “In this mix I’ve taken my favorite current house, breaks, disco, electro, techno, even dubstep tunes. These are the big ones destroying my dance floors! Subfocus, Armand Van Helden, Groove Armada, Slyde, Cirez D, Elite Force, Evil 9 and more. Plus, an exclusive tune from my new project Rushmore & Fiasco ‘The Vibe’. Enjoy the Selection!” (And enjoy it we will, Justin. No worries there. I think it’s safe to say this mix is about to find its way to the top of many iTunes playlists!)

There are two ways you can get Justin’s “Breakin in the House” mix: 1. Directly from Box.net 2. Or by subscribing to the Gough Street Sessions

Here’s a small holiday present from me, and you don’t have to wait until tomorrow to listen. It’s a lot of new school funk, a bit of old school house, and some disco—stuff you don’t hear out at parties all that often, but when you do, you think, “Aw yeah, make some room on the dance floor.” Or maybe you don’t, what the hell do I know.

Anyway, I know it’s cliche, but “Happy Holidays!”

Tracks are…

How to survive New Year's 2010, plus Upcoming Events, and New Music

Posted by 8Ball Fri, 04 Dec 2009 20:39:00 GMT

Hello Friendly Person:

When it comes to New Year’s 2010, you got 2 choices in how you can make it through the party. If you think you have plenty of choices you are wrong. You don’t. This year you are looking down the long and mighty barrel of a 10th anniversary Breakfast of Champions that lands on a freakin’ Friday! That’s the VERY BEGINNING of what’s bound to be a legendary weekend, so I’m telling you: there are 2 choices. If you want to make it through New Year’s 201, you either go Mentat or you go Sex Tape.

Mentats are those brainy dudes from Frank Herbet’s Dune. They’re the samurais of Thought. Their brains are so buff that all they have to do is WILL themselves to know something and, poof, they know it! If you were waiting for MUNI, and a Mentat was next to you, you wouldn’t have to step out in the street to squit for the next bus. You’d just go, “Hey, Mentat dude. When’s the next bus?” And he’d say, “In seven-minutes, twenty-two-seconds, eight-hundreths of a millisecond, fourteen nanoseconds, sixtillion nippleseconds, etc.” At Breakfast of Champions, the first thing the Mentat does when he shows up is receit the Mentat Mantra:

“It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.”

I don’t know what “sapho” is, but I’m sure it’s illegal, so keep it on the DL. Between the sapho and his Mantra, that fucking Mentat is now ready to party his ass off for the next 3 days. Because of his super thinking, he isn’t going to get tired, he won’t need disco naps, he will pound any cocktail or shot travels within arm’s reach, and he will continually dance. Even during the breakdowns, that Mentat will be a dancing fool. It’s mind over matter – that’s the Mentat way – and that is why going Mentat is one of your options for making it through New Year’s this year.

Your other option: go Sex Tape. It’s a little like going Full-Retard, but with more drugs and less sympathy. For some, Sex Tape is a way of life. It’s like a state of Zen. You’re mind is so empty of shame or consequence that when life presents you with an opportunity to do something really retarded, you seize that opportunity without so much as an, “only if you promise you won’t put this on YouTube.” When you blank our mind in this fashion, you’re primed for survival at Breakfast of Champions. Nothing you do will matter except having fun. You’ll ignore the cameras, the shocked and appalled stares of your friends, as you pull down your pants and suck down a balloon of nitrous and flop on the danceloor like a fish to the bassline. Oral sex at the bar in front of all your friends? Why not! Sharted your pants? Who needs underwear anyway! Doesn’t that sound fun?!

So, there’s are your options. You dedicate yourself to survival through Power of the Mind, or you become the mental equivalent of a comatose chihuahua and succumb to the pleasures of unabashed stupidity. What you don’t want to do is try a little of both. When you do that, it’s like Mr. Miyagi says:

“Walk on road, hm? Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later. Squish! Just like grape.”

XO, 8

Live from Ghost Ship, Episode 4: H8ball

Posted by 8Ball Thu, 26 Nov 2009 00:29:00 GMT

We have a little Thanksgiving treat for you, Friendly Person. The latest installment of the Ghost Ship mixes is from yours truly, 8ball, and lemme tell you, this mix is going to be the perfect compliment for your holiday dining. I don’t want to oversell this, but I think it’s fair to say that if you download this mix and drop it on mom and pop’s stereo at dinner tomorrow you will definitely get their attention. Maybe even in a good way!

I know there are a lot of rumors out that about 8ball, and it’s sometimes hard to know what to believe, how to separate the truth from the truthy. So, I’ll take this moment to set the record straight. Yes, I am the longest serving member of Space Cowboys. No, my DJ name is not a drug reference. Yes, it does seem a lot like a drug reference, but I swear it’s not. No, the guy who tried to burn the man a few years back wasn’t listening to Deckless Wonder vol. 3 on his iPod moments before he did it. Yes, I sharted at BoC and had to play my set and hang out for the rest of the party commando-style. And no, I don’t patrol the crime-ridden streets of San Francisco dolling out justice wearing a mask, a cape, and shirt cocking.

Now, where was I… Oh yeah. Here’s my Ghost Ship set. I went with breaks for this party, mainly because it’d been a while since I played a breaksy set. I had a strategy: since the party was called Ghost Ship I had to play “I’m On a Boat” and since it was Halloween I had to play “Thriller”. And I played some other stuff, because if I’d just played those 2 songs for the full hour it might’ve been a little weird.

- 8B

Tracks are…
  1. I’m On a Boat featuring T Pain – DJ Kue’s Remix – The Lonely Island

  4. Block Parties – Slyde
  5. Get Hype On This – BSD
