Aside from one single significant (important and world-changing) exception, 2008 was a horrible ass-biter of a year and when it’s gone the only person who will mourn the fucker will be racist moose-hunting war mongers and their bible thumping fans. 2009 can’t help but do better by us and – if the weather man’s correct – New Year’s Day is going to be crisp and clear. That means not only do you get to kick your New Year’s off right with Breakfast of Champions, you also get the added benefit of being able to enjoy some fresh air between DJ sets without getting rained on! If you were at last year’s BoC you know what I’m talking about.

Real quick, because I’ve got a dozen screaming hyper children in my office screaming so loud they’re making my ears bleed. Donor fatigue is a real phenomenon, and operations that function off charity are really, really, really fucked this year. So if you’ve got 3 pennies in your pocket and you only need 2 to rub together, then consider dropping the extra in a donation jar somewhere. Space Cowboys had a great year, we’ve never been in this for a profit, so in the hopes of setting an example I’ll tell you about a couple charities we’ve been able to give some love to (and this isn’t a specific endorsement of these causes, though they are good—there are plenty of other more noble causes out there, but these are a couple our group was feeling).

NIMBY Nimby, a place the Mog called home at one point, is raising money to move to their entire operations into a brand new, non-fire damaged and up to Oakland city code home! We donated to this cause, and urge you to do the same! If you don’t have the cash, you can donate your time and energy to help them physically move, too. Wrist Deep Productions puts on some of the most creative, hilarious, I’m-very-uncomfortable-with-what-was-just-said-on-stage-so-why-am-I-laughing? comedy extravaganzas Denver has ever seen.

There’s the Squire Lounge open mic night every Tuesday, voted Best Comedy Night in 2005 and 2007 by the Village Voice’s Westword Newspaper and Best Comedy Night by readers in 2006. Straight up.

For two nights only, Wrist Deep Productions is bringing their critically acclaimed Los Comicos Super Hilariosos, a monthly comedy smack-down featuring local Denver favorites and visiting comedians, to Piano Fights Studio250 at the Off Market Theater. This show combines stand-up, videos, and sketch comedy.

Pulling together the talents of Greg Baumhauer, Adam Cayton-Holland, Ben Roy and Jim Hickox (all regular feature and headliner acts at the world famous Denver Comedy Works), Wrist Deep is the type of production company that believes comedy is best served with cheap beer and lots of friends.

Rovian plottings, Election party, and Fresh this Friday

Hello Friendly Person:

First, I’m not here to remind you to vote. Unless you’ve been locked in a forgotten porta-potty somewhere in the back of a deserted warehouse in the most remote reaches of Kathmandu, you know the election is today, you know what’s at stake, and if you don’t vote it’s because you made the conscious and deliberate decision NOT to vote. You probably have a very good reason, like maybe you’re a communist dickhead assclown terrorist-hugger.

Instead, I’m going to share with you something scary I thought of this morning—something that chilled my blood and made my heart skip a beat the moment it popped in my head. What if it’s all a Rovian ploy? Think about it: Dick Cheney, Barrack Obama. Have you ever seen the two of them in the same place at the same time? What if the whole time it’s just been Cheney in an Obama suit? OK, I know it’s just a crazy paranoid delusion, but I still can’t help but wonder if Rove didn’t considered the idea at least once. Maybe he used a shrinker-ray; miniaturized Cheney and inserted him into the cockpit of an Obama-bot that he will operate for the next 4 to 8 years. Maybe he develop some kind of evil mind-transfer device, like Freaky Friday; think of the terror Obama would feel seeing the cruel and sneering face of Cheney staring back at him in the mirror while the real Cheney proceeded to dismantle the Constitution from within Obama’s skin. Spooky stuff, huh?

It’s the elections again, & it’s ABOUT TIME!!!!! I know the majority of you San Franciscans are hoping that soon we’ll be living in an Obama-nation, but I really must say that the last 8 years have truly been an abomination. So it’s time to CELEBRATE! Bush is going out of office, there’s no possible way he can get re-elected regardless of what happens in Florida, and this sad saga in American history is finally coming to a close.

Come join us @ Mighty where we’ll be broadcasting the election coverage throughout the club with a soundtrack provided by a bunch of amazing artists who just can’t help but celebrate the fact that there really is a light at the end of the tunnel, and yes, it’s changing colors.

In the back room we’ll have some food & snacks as well as a couple televisions setup in a more relaxing environment so that the more serious voter can catch all the election info as it comes in.

Outside, Peter (TeacherWiththeBus.com) will be bringing down his awesome bus with the dance-floor & the Ambient Mafia will be providing the music, visuals, & who knows what else.

In the main room, music will be provided by a couple SF dj’s that you know, as well as a couple that you probably should know. & we might even have a special, super secret, can’t tell you yet, out-of-town dj stop in to play, but I guess you’ll just have to come to find out.

Regardless, this is a lineup to be reckoned with. After the calamity of Ghostship, bring it all back home to our monthly FRESH. This is the time to do it – celebrate the beginning of a new era of Obama. Or, have a dance-off, bringing to the dancefloor some Palin-esque hockey-mom moves or whatever ails you. You can shave RIPE into the hairy backsides of our latest SpaceCowboy inductees or just poke fun at the Spacecowpoke (me!) that is barely holding on to membership. FRESH @ SHINE is not happening in December, so this is the time to get down and shake your rump and reconnect with the core posse. A few siesmologists will be on hand to measure the evening on the richter scale of funk-tastical tasty-ness.

But if you’ve only been listening to mixes you’ve downloaded of mine, be prepared for something a bit different than you’re used to. This set was recorded while I was playing at False Profits “Priceless” campout towards the end of 2008, and since it’s an opening set, it starts out very chill. You might recognize a couple of the 1st few tracks, but after that the majority of them are fairly new. I had a ton of fun playing this set & even forgot that I was recording for a while, so there’s a bunch of little tricks, stabs, & cross-overs. I bet you can’t count them all.”
