A peek inside the kimono

For those who are interested in how the Space Cowboys sausage is made, here’s an excerpt from an email from Space Cowboy James sent a couple days before the event opened. Pootie and crew were ushering the Mog to the playa, and Steve J was driving up Martha, and both faced and overcame adversity:

Both Steve’s get extra bonus points for their mechanical first aid procedures on their way to the playa. First off, Steve J. started his Burning Man adventure Friday night with transmission problems with Martha, and was able to limp back home to Sacramento whereas he proceeded to stay up until 5am welding on the transmission fluid pan to get a water tight seal. Then, he was rewarded with a tire blowout 20 miles outside of Empire where he made the wonderful discovery that Martha’s spare tire had been effectively sealed off and unaccessible given all of Martha’s mutant vehicle modifications. After cutting out the tire with a metal grinder, he got to replace the tire with no lug wrench, and part of his jack missing. He arrived Saturday afternoon, finally!

Steve H. (Pootie) and entourage had their own fun with the Mog in Reno. After being delivered via flatbed to Reno, they discovered that oil had gotten into the gasoline mix and fried all of the spark plugs. After doing an oil change and cleaning, then swapping all of the plugs (what fun in the parking lot of a Kragen in Reno on a 100+ temperature day), they proceeded to get the truck running, blowing black smoke for a while. Then, again near Empire, after stopping the truck wouldn’t start again, due to a fried/dead battery.

Not Another Fracking Playa Schedule

Hello Friendly Person:

For the last couple days I’ve been getting schedules fired at me from DJs and theme camps so I’ll be sure not to miss single soul enriching moment on the playa.

It’s like Burning Man has become a multi-tracked convention, I’m not saying it’s necessarily a bad thing, but I have noticed that I’m stressed out. I’ve started an email folder just to hold onto all the reminders, schedules, lists, do not misses, that I’ve received. Next year we’ll all just load the whole playa schedule into Outlook and carry it around on PDAs. If in the future when BM finally stops changing year to year, Lonely Planet could get around to publishing the definitive tourist guide to BRC’s playa hot spots, corridors of bohemian charm, and hidden hoods “where the arty kids hang-out”.

Personally, I like the random shit. Maybe more than anything else. There are so many severely demented synchronous little scenes that just magically happen, like when a bunch of us were ridin’ dirty along the esplanade in Martha, and got pinned down under a barrage of fire from a pants cannon, and just before we could retreat someone pointed out that Adz had been abducted by some twisted game show, and before we could get him back on board the show host double-dog-dared him to publicly smear a handful of wasabi on his junk, which he did right before he started crying like a little girl. Only at Burning Man, man. There’s definitely value in the planned happenings, but never in a million years would anyone plan to put wasabi on their junk. Not planning is when the magic happens. (Unless you’re a stoner, in which case you probably never leave camp, you lazy buttholes.)

So, with that off my chest, I’ll now proceed to provide you, Friendly Person, with a list of Space Cowboy events and happenings that you will only ignore at the risk of your everlasting salvation, happiness, and enlightenment. Forget God, forget prayer, forget meditation—this is your one and only chance to get to heaven by attending all these events. Some of these events might overlap or be at the same time. That’s not my problem. If you can’t figure out how to be in two places at the same time perhaps you’re not worthy of salvation anyway.

xo,

NASA Raves

The Cowboys have been part of some pretty cool things for sure, leading the SF Love Parade three years in a row or increasing the risk of an avalanche at Squaw are just a couple that come to mind. But this past Friday, April 13th, 2007 has to be one of the more surreal ones. In honor of Yuri’s Night, the NASA Ames Research Center down at Moffett Field flung the doors wide open on the 211 Hangar and invited an eclectic mix of the science/tech community to mingle with Burner culture. Feeling a bit like a science fair and a lot like the playa with robots, art and a couple big planes for the hell of it, the night was more fun than an erector set on acid!

The Mog was in full effect on the tarmac and anytime she’s out, there’s always lots of curious bystanders peeking their heads in, asking questions and commenting on how neat she is. The difference this time was a lot of those inquisitive strangers were NASA officials and security which made it that much cooler. The general good spirits of everyone at NASA was impressive, they all seemed to have a great sense of humor and were very welcoming to the revelers. As for the party itself, the Cowboys “sound” was a great counter-balance to the headliners Plaid and Tefon tel Aviv, who are a little more chill than our standard fare. Once we were allowed to go full blast with her after midnight, it was pretty sweet to see just as many people shakin’ their thang in front of the Mog as there were inside the hangar.

The Cowboys have had close ties to Yuri’s Night since it’s inception, due to the fact that HellDog’s own sister Loretta and husband George are the founders. Needless to say we were more than excited for an excuse to party at NASA! It was very cool to be part of such a unique event and it sounds like this wont be the last time.

Here’s to you Yuri Gagarin, the original Space Cowboy!
